The Steinmeyer Legacy

steinmeyerAs most local people will be aware, Heinrich Steinmeyer, who was a prisoner at Cultybraggan Camp towards the end of World War II, was deeply moved by the unexpected way he was treated both at the camp and by people from the Comrie area.

Heinrich died in 2014, and since then there has been a lengthy process in Germany to settle his estate, and to transfer the £384,000 to a special bank account set up by Comrie Development Trust.

This page will document the progress made in setting up a village wide committee to survey the wishes of everyone in the village as to how the money should be spent.

Steinmeyer Legacy Fund public meeting 14.3.17

Background The story as it appeared in Der Spiegel

The Steinmeyer legacy Interim Committee has been working since January of this year (2017) on how to consult people in Comrie about the use of the legacy funds.

The first main consultation event was a public meeting, held in the White Church on Tuesday 14 March.

Complete List of the Minutes of the Interim Committee

This public meeting was very well attended by around 100 people. There was a chance for everyone to speak in their discussion groups about what they would like to see the legacy spent on for older people in Comrie, and with all of these ideas reported back to the whole meeting. It was emphasised at the public meeting that everyone attending should still complete the legacy fund survey.

The survey forms have been delivered across the village, and extra forms are available in various village venues for any household needing more, or for any people who have been missed. The survey is aimed for completion by people of all ages and returned to the locations identified on the form by 5.00 p.m. on 28 March.

The next steps taken by the Interim Committee will entirely depend on what comes back from the survey, but will also take account of the comments and proposals made in the public meeting. The survey also asked everyone whether they wanted to express an interest in being a member of the Legacy Group taking things forward from this stage, or whether they wanted to provide any assistance to that group.

The interim committee has been very positive in support of the Steinmeyer Legacy Interim Committee minutes being made publicly available.
