Youth Conference

13/06/2012

Comrie Youth Conference – February 20th and 21st 2013

Comrie Development Trust is planning to hold a two-day event at Comrie Croft for the younger generation of Comrie on 20th and 21st February 2013 i.e. during the in-service days.

The aim of the event is to find out from the younger generation what, if anything, they would like to see happen for them locally in and around Comrie on climate change issues. For instance it may be a cycling/walking project that encourages them to use bikes or walk rather than get in a car; it may be a drama-based project that encourages them to explore their views on climate change and then take action; it might be something around growing food locally; it may be arts based or skills based etc.

The event will include a range of age-appropriate activities that are fun and stimulating.

The event includes a residential element for secondary age youngsters and young adults.  The Conference is fully funded through the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund, so there is no cost to young people.  Parents and/or guardians will need to accompany children under eight.  Transport from Comrie and food will be provided.

We are hoping to involve a couple of young people from each school year group to steer us in having a lively event that interests them, captures their imagination, and encourages them to look at what they can do to make a difference to their futures. We are asking for interested youngsters to attend two planning meetings after school in advance of the event and to help in recruiting other young people to attend.

Involvement in the event would fit in well with the outcomes of young people becoming effective contributors and responsible citizens.

It may also be suitable for those involved with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for their service element or other volunteering awards. The subject matter has links to PSE lessons and aspects of geography as well.  This also fits in well with the agenda for eco-schools.

The Conference is open to all young people from babies and toddlers (and their parents / carers), Primary / High School pupils and school leavers.  If you are interested in helping steer this event please get in touch by e-mailing franloots@yahoo.com or emma_margrett10@hotmail.com

A provisional date for first discussions has been set for Thursday 29th November (details to be confirmed).

Finally, if anyone can think of a better name rather than the Comrie Youth Conference please let us know!
